Student start-up works with alum to build retail strategy

June 24, 2013

Buena Vida Coffee, a Marquette student-run venture founded in 2010, recently launched a retail strategy under the mentorship of Marquette Business alumnus Jim Sartori (1977), CEO of Sartori Cheese.

With his guidance, Buena Vida met with buyers at Milwaukee-based Sendik’s Food Markets and launched its product line in the New Berlin, Wis., store in December 2012. The team recently expanded to the chain’s Mequon, Wis., location in April 2013 and has held a series of demos at both locations.

Buena Vida and Sartori Cheese on Saturday, July 13, will be side-by-side, giving out samples from their respective product lines at the Mequon location from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sartori Cheese has also served as the pilot for Buena Vida Coffee’s office coffee program, providing coffee in several Sartori Cheese locations.

“It is amazing how supportive and resourceful Jim [Sartori] is,” says Buena Vida student CEO Daniel Klingelhoets (’16), who has led the coffee demos. “His knowledge and guidance has really allowed us make our entry into the retail setting.”

Buena Vida Coffee is carried in Mequon and New Berlin Sendik’s locations. For every bag of coffee sold Buena Vida Coffee provides one meal to one child at Sociedad Amigos de los Niños orphanage in Honduras. To learn more, visit buenavidacoffee.com.
