Undergraduate

Graduates from our Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting typically are among the best nationally when it comes to passing the CPA Exam. In recent years, our program ranked in the top ten nationally in terms of pass rate for first time candidates to the CPA Exam. Whether you are looking for a career in a public accounting firm, large corporation, consulting firm or in the non-profit arena, our dedicated faculty will help you develop the tools that will prepare you to be a socially responsible leader poised for a successful career.  Our graduates are recruited by leading employers in the region and the nation, such as KPMG, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers , Deloitte, Accenture, Grant Thornton, the Kohler Company, Baker Tilly and many more, including acceptance at graduate and law schools.

A Well-Rounded Curriculum

Our major covers a wide variety of topics, including auditing, cost, taxation, and information systems. Majors also take a communication course designed to address the oral and written skills accounting professionals need in order to serve clients and their organizations effectively.

Applied Learning

Students have many opportunities to enhance their classroom knowledge with applied learning experiences while learning from working professionals and our faculty members. Many majors are members of the professional accounting organization, Beta Alpha Psi. The Marquette Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi was recently recognized as one of 14 chapters included in the KPMG Gold Challenge, an honor accorded to those chapters with strong records in building relationships with professionals, developing leadership skills and a high level of community service, among other requirements. Our majors can also take part in full semester internships with accounting firms and organizations, and all students in the college have the opportunity to participate in our formal mentoring program.

Preparing for the CPA Exam

Those who wish to engage in public accounting practice in most states as certified public accountants should familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations issued by the various state boards. For example, most states (including Wisconsin and Illinois) require prospective CPAs to complete 150 semester hours of education. The Department of Accounting offers a master of science in accounting degree which meets the 150-hour requirement.
