Eppli named Interim Dean

In August, Dr. Mark Eppli, Robert B. Bell, Sr., Chair in Real Estate, was named Interim James H. Keyes Dean of Business Administration here at Marquette. Dr. Eppli succeeds Dr. Linda Salchenberger, who was promoted to Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Budgeting. For the past several months Dr. Eppli has maintained a dual role as interim dean and Bell Chair in Real Estate, with a great deal of time being spent leading the visioning process for a new College of Business Administration, exemplified in our internal academic programming and potentially a new facility.

Although Dr. Eppli is spending more time on college-wide activities, he still makes the Center for Real Estate a priority. Thanks especially to Andy Hunt, assistant director of the Center for Real Estate, Dr. Anthony Pennington-Cross, professor of finance and real estate, and Betty Bell, chair of the Center for Real Estate Advisory Board, the Center and our programs have not missed a beat.

Even more exciting is the leadership our college is experiencing thanks to this real estate professor! As Dr. Eppli spends more time on a vision and planning for the College of Business Administration, the Center for Real Estate is often brought up and used as an example in terms of the student-focused, applied-learning model we use on a daily basis. Dr. Eppli continues to share with the rest of the college and the university as a whole the ways in which the Center has helped distinguish ourselves and enhanced the student experience, academic research, and industry outreach. Our work is getting noticed at the highest levels of the university thanks to Mark, and we look forward to continuing to be a leader among the programs in the College of Business Administration.

Raising the Bar – CRE establishes Advisory Board

We are thrilled to announce the establishment of the Center for Real Estate Advisory Board in April 2012. This diverse group is led by chairperson Betty Bell, director of marketing for Pabst Farms Development. Betty, along with her husband Peter, have been part of the real estate program at Marquette since Dr. Eppli was hired in 2002, and continue to be some of our biggest supporters. She holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from Marquette University and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. In the past, Betty has served as an adjunct marketing instructor at Kellogg, and she continues to connect with students every fall at Marquette by helping real estate majors with resumes and job interviewing techniques.

Betty is joined by 19 highly-qualified board members who represent different sectors of the real estate industry. They range in age and experience and include recent alumni, heads of companies, parents of current and past students, employers of our students, and donors to our program. For a list of all our board members, please follow this link.

MPOWR stands for the board’s mission to promote opportunities for students in real estate and widen the reach/reputation of the real estate program on a national level.  With four active committees led by an incredibly accomplished executive committee, we are thankful to have their support and guidance and look forward to achieving even more as they push the Center for Real Estate to greatness.

100% Placement in May and December

Thanks to the efforts of many, the real estate program achieved a 100% placement rate for our May 2012 graduates within 3 months of graduation! The Center helped place 17 students into full time positions, with more than 26% going into investment and analyst roles and 21% accepting brokerage positions. Other job placements include property management, banking, and development. We also saw four students enter into either accounting, marketing or supply chain positions. Overall, more than 80% of real estate majors (many of whom had a second major in another area of study) chose real estate as their career path. This is very significant and speaks to the strength of our program and ability to place students in full-time jobs versus other industries. Our 100% placement level was also the highest of any major in the College of Business Administration, and we even finished placing our last graduate before the AIM program achieved 100% placement as well – a significant achievement. Our strength in helping students find full-time employment continues to be a cornerstone of our focus in the Center for Real Estate.

In December we had only one graduate, Peter Lefaivre, who was placed with Wells Fargo real estate lending in Milwaukee. Congratulations to Peter on his graduation this month and his employment.

Congratulations to all our graduates in 2012:

1st-Ever Real Estate Strategies Conference a Huge Success

In September, the Center for Real Estate held our first-ever Real Estate Strategies Conference at Marquette University. More than 275 attendees were treated to a keynote by former Equity International CIO Thomas McDonald, two great panels on capital markets and space utilization trends, and a closing celebration of the 10-year anniversary of Dr. Mark Eppli’s arrival at Marquette and the establishment of the Real Estate program.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Planning has already begun for the 2013 Real Estate Strategies Conference, which will once again be held in the Alumni Memorial Union at Marquette University. Please mark your calendars for the afternoon of Thursday, September 12th, 2013. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for this event, contact Center Assistant Director Andy Hunt at andrew.hunt@marquette.edu. We look forward to seeing you in September!

The Mile High Experience – Recap of the ULI conference trip

On October 17-19, 2012 five students and Center for Real Estate Assistant Director Andy Hunt headed to Denver for the Urban Land Institute Fall Meeting. More than 5,000 professionals were present this year in Denver, and the students were treated to several great sessions as well as some high-level networking with many of Denver’s top real estate professionals. Of all the conference trips our program has taken in the last few years, this was one of the best thanks to so many wonderful professionals sharing their time with our group. Highlights:

  • On Wednesday, we limited the meetings for the students in an attempt to force them to get out of their comfort zone, attending sessions and networking. This was a great learning experience for the students.  As Amanda Lawson (BusAd ’14) described, “I was glad we didn’t have much scheduled for us the first day because we had to learn to get comfortable going to sessions and networking with people. There were so many people there and so much going on but it felt really good to be on our own for a day to experience everything.”
  • Attended meetings with Trammell Crow Denver’s Bill Mosher (Managing Director) and Kenneth Ho (Real Estate Manager), who spoke at length about a few groundbreaking projects in downtown Denver. A special thank you to Danny Queenan, CEO of Trammell Crow and a CRE Advisory Board member, for his help in setting up these meetings.
  • Enjoyed dinner with alumni in LoDo (Lower Downtown) – Lydia Bruegge (BusAd ’11) and Jeff Urbanski (BusAd ’06). Lydia is working with a marketing firm in Aurora, Colorado, and Jeff is a grad student at the University of Wisconsin in the MSRE program.
  • Participated in a meeting with the Opus Development Group Denver office: Marshall Burton (SVP and General Manager), Celeste Tanner (Real Estate Director) and John Bauknight (Real Estate Manager). Thanks to Opus North – Milwaukee Managing Director Julie Ledger for making this connection (Julie is also a CRE Advisory Board member).
  • Spent about 30 minutes with The Mandel Group’s SVP Dick Lincoln before he flew out of town.  Dick talked with the students about ULI and some projects in Milwaukee. Thanks to Dr. Eppli for helping to make this connection.
  • Baceline Investments partner and Director of Acquisitions and Dispositions Doug Arnold met students at his office at the end of the day in LoDo, spending nearly 90 minutes with the students. Doug focuses on retail investments and explained, at length, his company’s strategy when looking at investments. Thanks to Bob Mahoney, Senior Partner of CBRE’s National Retail Investment Team (and a CRE Advisory Board member) for making this connection.
  • Friday’s field trip of Denver included a special excursion to the world-renown outdoor concert venue Red Rocks Park just outside of downtown.

Our next conference will be ICSC REC on May 19-22 in Las Vegas. If you plan to attend this conference and would be willing to spend some time speaking with our students, email Andy Hunt at andrew.hunt@marquette.edu.

The Alumni Strike Back – REALM boat cruise recap, spring events

At the conclusion of our first-ever Real Estate Strategies Conference on September 6th, the REALM Network (Real Estate Alumni Marquette) hosted a boat cruise for alumni and friends on the Milwaukee River and harbor. More than 50 people were in attendance for the two-hour cruise, including several board members and conference panelists. The food, catered by Zilli’s, was excellent and the networking so intense that the group had to be asked to leave the boat 30 minutes after returning to the dock! A big thank you to Nina Schuerman of Northwestern Mutual Real Estate and Amy Elston of Skanska USA (both REALM Board members) for planning such a successful event.

Mark your calendars! There are several alumni events taking place this spring:
February 9, 2013: Informal alumni postgame gathering, location TBD
March 2, 2013: Marquette Real Estate post-game event, Buck Bradley’s, 3:00-5:00 PM Register
March 28, 2013: Chicago Case Competition Teams Practice Event*
April 4, 2013: Milwaukee Case Competition Teams Practice Event*
*Alumni will receive an email with more details in January

Fall RE Club update

The Real Estate Club wrapped up a busy fall this year and elected a new Executive Board in early December. Co-presidents were elected for the first time since 2010. Congratulations to Tyrell McGee and Addison Termunde on being elected to lead the Real Estate Club in 2013. Both real estate majors have been involved with the club for several years and bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the position. To see the rest of the new executive board follow this link to their website.

The Real Estate Club had many successful events this year, including the following:

  • Volunteering at the registration table and taking part of the alumni boat cruise during the first-ever Real Estate Strategies Conference at Marquette in September
  • Resume reviews with Betty Bell in September
  • Site tour of the Green Exchange building in Chicago on September 28th
  • Trip to the Urban Land Institute conference in Denver, Colorado, October 17th-19th
  • “Real Estate Intro Night” on October 25th – this event was used to recruit potential real estate majors to the program and included 17 speakers representing 9 different career paths. Professionals were placed at different tables with students moving from table to table across several rounds of networking and learning about the many career paths. The event attracted almost 50 students, most of them new to the program, and many students said later they would likely become real estate majors after the event! A big thanks to our speakers as well:
    • Asset Management: Jeff Ruidl of Northwestern Mutual and Marilyn Herzberg of Greywolf Partners
    • Brokerage: Bob Mahoney of CBRE National Retail Investment Group and Mike Wanezek of Colliers International
    • Corporate: Mark Hoffman of Claire’s and Bill Sinsky of Robert W. Baird & Co.
    • Development: Rick Barrett of Barrett Visionary Development and Julie Ledger of The Opus Group
    • Legal: Mike Riopel of Whyte Hirschboeck & Dudek

    • Residential: Suzanne Head and Rick Lentz of First Weber and Kate Santo of WHR Group

  • •Eisenberg Career Day November 1st-2nd in Chicago. More than 20 students attended this overnight event. In addition, club president Kayley Carswell secured a pre-event site tour of the Michigan Avenue retail area on the morning of the first day. A special thank you to Michelle Panovich of Mid-America Real Estate Group (and a CRE Advisory Board member) for helping to make this tour happen.
  • •Site tour of the new Pabst Brewery extended-stay hotel in downtown Milwaukee. Thanks to Ted Matkom of Gorman and Company for spending time with our students.

Eisenberg Foundation Awards

On Tuesday, October 2nd, the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation held their annual awards night in Chicago, and Marquette was well represented. The formal event was held at the Standard Club with more than 500 real estate professionals from all over the country in attendance. Among the awards presented, Marquette was part of two:

  • The Marquette case competition team was awarded with their 1st place trophy from the April 2012 competition. All four team members were in attendance, including May 2012 grads Kyle McElwee, Nick Koglin and Maggie Brueggen, and current senior Joe McWeeney.
  • Andy Hunt, Marquette University Center for Real Estate assistant director, was presented the “Faculty Award” for his involvement in getting Marquette’s students connected with the Eisenberg programs (Career Day, Eisenopoly, Mentorships, and the Midwest Real Estate Challenge case competition)
