2011 Business Plan Competition Awards Banquet Keynote
Chuck Templeton took his first big step as an entrepreneur in San Francisco when he founded OpenTable Inc., which went public on NASDAQ (OPEN) in May 2009. He helped build an industry-leading company that changed the way full-service restaurants manage their top-line growth and diners make reservations. As CEO, he recruited and hired the first management team, obtained and allocated company resources, led business and product strategy, and carefully crafted a highly dedicated culture. He spoke at Marquette’s Business Plan Competition Awards Banquet on April 13, 2011.

Dr. D. Stephen Long, professor of systematic theology; Dennis Long, former vice president of retirement and investor services for the Principal Financial Group; and Dr. Kevin Gibson, director of Marquette’s Center for Ethics Studies and associate professor of philosophy and management; presented “A Discussion on Ethics in Business — Why They Count in the Entrepreneurial World.” Dr. Linda M. Salchenberger, James H. Keyes Dean of Business Administration, moderated.

Albert Orr, shareholder at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren s.c., hosted the panel discussion “The Art of the Private Equity Deal.” Panelists included John Schliesmann, shareholder in business law, tax and international practices at Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren; John Silseth, president of Antietam LLC; and Tim Keane, founder and director of the Marquette Golden Angels Network.

About the Speaker
"Good ideas win." Jeff Hoffman, founder and former CEO of the priceline.com family of companies, would know. He is a partner in ColorJar, a venture accelerator firm he founded that helps entrepreneurs and small business owners launch and grow new business ventures. Hoffman launched his first software company while a student at Yale University and has founded and grown a series of successful start-up companies throughout his career.
About the Talk
Hoffman shared with the Marquette community what it takes to be an entrepreneur, including the major life lesson he learned from five-time heavyweight champion of the world Evander Holyfield.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
A Silicon Valley icon and philanthropist for more than thirty years, Steve Wozniak has helped shape the computing industry with his design of Apple’s first line of products the Apple I and II and influenced the popular Macintosh. In 1976, Wozniak and Steve Jobs founded Apple Computer Inc. with Wozniak’s Apple I personal computer. Wozniak currently serves as Chief Scientist for Fusion-IO and is a published author with the release of his New York Times bestselling autobiography, iWoz: From Computer Geek to Cult Icon, in September 2006 by Norton Publishing.
