Chris Jeske
Information Technology & Marketing major, Africana Studies minor
Chris Jeske, a senior majoring in Marketing and IT, recently produced a documentary on the events leading up to a shooting during a city council meeting in his hometown of Kirkwood, Missouri. Kirkwood had recently annexed and began redeveloping a neighboring historically-black community, creating tensions among neighbors and residents.
According to Chris: "This project was a great challenge for me as I strived to integrate all three areas of my studies: IT, Marketing, and Africana Studies. It would have been very hard for me to complete this project had I not been at Marquette because I was able to get professional advice, and make use of professional equipment. The project took two years to complete and I received tremendous support from all areas of campus including the College of Business Administration, the Center for Peacemaking, and the Instructional Media Center."
Chris got the idea for the project while he was working on a presentation for his Business Communications class on the topic of modern racism. "One of the most important business lessons that I learned is how important small businesses are in many minority communities. A few thriving small businesses can be a great source of pride and community," says Chris.
With the documentary complete and released on the web, Chris received Marquette University's Pedro Arrupe Award. Learn more about Chris, the project and view the documentary at the website he created: www.kirkwood-documentary.com
Brian Hansen
Last year Hansen earned the qualifying spot in long-track speed skating’s 1500-meter event as well as the team pursuit for the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. In order to qualify he had to place top four in the U.S. The 19 year old set 5 of 6 Junior American Records and holds one Junior World Record in the 1500 meters event. Despite being one of the world’s top juniors, Hansen was considered to be on the bubble for an individual berth into the Olympics.
Brian Hansen is a freshman in the College of Business Administration, majoring in Entrepreneurship and Real Estate. While attending Marquette full-time, he trains 30 hours weekly, including skating at the Petit National Ice Center in nearby West Allis.
In Vancouver Hansen finished 18th in the 1500 meters and won a Silver medal in the team pursuit joined by Chad Hedrick, Trevor Marsicano, and Jonathan Kuck. Although the team was considered to be underdogs heading into the games, the team pulled through by beating the heavily favored Dutch putting them into the Gold-Silver medal round. Hansen and his teammates missed gold by only two tenths of a second to Canada. Only two weeks after closing ceremonies, Hansen became Junior World Champion in the 1000 and 1500-meter event while taking Silver in the all-round category.
A senior majoring in IT and Marketing, Chris Jeske recently produced a documentary on a shooting in his hometown.
